Bengali Pahela Boishakh in thousands of varieties and cultures.






The first day of Bengali year,the first Boishakh (the first month of the Bengali calendar,1st day of Baishakh ) is celebrated as the Bengali new year. Bengali new year is celebrated with various traditions and cultures. this day is celebrated for the prosperity of all, forgetting all old miseries. Pohela Boishakh is a universal festival of Bengali. The Bengali of Bangladesh and west Bengal , Assam of India are celebrate the first Boishakh with joy every year. On this day, all government and non-government institutes are closed.
 The Bengali year started  counting from 10 march or 11 march 1564 AD. Earlier it was called crop year. Because it was made for agriculture. At present it is known Bangla san or Bangabda. From then on, when the new yer celebrations started, the farmers had to pay all the rent at the end of the month of Chaitra. There was a time when Bengali were completely dependent on agriculture. So they depended seasons. At that time, the first Boishakh was celebrated as a seasonal. The main significance of which was agriculture. After the establishment of the Mughal empire in the India, the emperors collected rent according to the Hijri year. But as the Hijri year was depend on the moon, it did not coincide with agriculture. As a result,the farmers had not to pay rent on time. Emperor Akbar introduce the Bengali year to determine the exact time of collection of rent. Fatehullah Siraji, the famous astronomer, built the Bengali year on the orders of the emperor.   

 At the time the main source of festive of Pohela Boishakh was Halkhata. Halkhata means a new book or a new account.  Buyers payoff their debts and sign up for a new account. On this day, the shopkeepers entertain the customers with sweets. At present this practice is prevalent in many places. The Boishakhi fair makes the new year more joyful. In this fair mainly local agricultural products, folk art, industrial products and pottery products are available. Boishakhi fairs are organized in Narayanganj, Dhaka, Mahasthangarh, comilla, Mymensingh, madaripur and others places of Bangladesh. The Boishakhi fair is mainly organized in the open field.

 On this day, it is customary of eat PANTA RICE  with fried Hilsa fish. In the city of Dhaka, the new year is celebrated in a wonderful way. At the initiative of Chayanat, everyone gathered at Ramna Batamul in a national bond. Rabi Tagore's- " asho hey boishakh, asho asho"  the new year is welcomed with this song. On the initiative of Dhaka University's institute os Fine Arts a MANGAL SHUBHAJATRA is organized on the first day of Boishakh. Colorful masks and replicas of various animals are used in this. This Mangal Shubhajatra has been organized since 1989 for the welfare of the nation.
